These are a few questions based on Clare's summary slide - AJ and Caff think they are potential exam questions

1
Q

Why is it important to consider individual as well as group differences in IQ testing?

A
  • Because individual differences in IQ exist that may cause some individuals to show a change in IQ

Q

What are the key points of the Flynn effect?

A
  • The Flynn-effect causes IQ to increase over time
  • IQ is, in effect, re-set when tests are re-normed
  • Therefore it is unfair to compare a 20 years old from 2013 score with a 20 years old’s score from 1950
  • It is unclear exactly what causes the Flynn-effect, though certainly improvements in technology, healthcare, SES, education, environment, and diet are thought to contribute
  • It is possible that the Flynn-effect will reverse as we maybe rely too heavily on technology and devices rather than develop self-reliant skills.

A diagnosis of Intellectual Disability can be of crucial importance to a person, what are some key considerations?

A

*Intellectual Disability criteria is extremely sensitive,
Having an ID impacts: Conceptual, Social and Practical skills
*ID diagnosis or lack has major implications (e.g. death penalty, criminal justice, social benefits, educational support)
*Whilst it is possible to fake, it’s hard to fake effectively (can be spotted)
*2.5-3% of Australia population have ID
6.5-7% have at least borderline diagnosis

Q

What is an important and, if poorly handled, quite controversial element of Indigenous Populations IQ scores?

A
  • Indigenous Populations are at risk for low IQ and associated legal complications
  • It is important to remember that IQ tests were written, normed/standardised in the context of white, middle class north American men, and are rarely culture-free
  • The low scores are perhaps more a reflection of the low SES & restriction of opportunities open to Indigenous population rather than of the IQ of Indigenous populations
  • NB Indigenous Europeans and Australians score around the same as each other.
