lecture 6 Flashcards
what is meant by the term “fluvial”?
found in river
what are the 4 types of particle movement in rivers, explained?
traction- dragging of large particles
saltation- bouncing of smaller particles
suspension- the flow of particles smaller than sand
solution- small minerals/salts which have dissolved
what is alluvium?
soil deposited by running water
what is a floodplain?
parts of a river valley which contains alluvium which has been left by floods
what are some causes of floods?
climate change (increase of rainfall) sea level increase land changed by construction
2 things to think about before construction on floodplains
risk of flood (flood maps) control measures (flood defence)
what is enroachment?
the change of river flow
what s a till?
soil deposited by glaciers
what is a glacier?
compacted ice/snow that moves slowly downhill
2 processes of glacier till
plucking: the ice freezes of the rock until it breaks
abrasion: rock is scraped against the ground
what is lodgement till?
till that has been consolidated by over riding glacier
what is ablation till?
deposited with glacier melts
what is glaciofluvial deposits?
outwash sand and gravel
what is glaciolacustrine deposits?
deposits in lake that have been created by meltwater from glaciers
what is meant by periglacial?
not directly affected by glaciers but influenced by low temperature
