lecture 3- sedimentary rock Flashcards
what is sedimentary rock?
rock formed by the weathering and erosion of existing rock
what are the most common minerals of the formation of sedimentary rock?
quartz and clay
describe the cycle of the sedimentary rock
the sediments caused by weathering are transported by lakes and rivers to the sea where they are deposited in layers where lithification can occur
what is lithification?
when the layering of sediment increases allowing compression and the hardening and consolidation of the bottom layers
what are some examples of sedimentary rock?
limestone, sandstone, shale
what the 2 groups on sedimentary rock, and explain them
clastic:
formed from fragments of existing rock by weathering.
non-clastic:
formed from organic process or precipitation in shallow seas
examples of clastic sedimentary rock
sandstone, conglomerate (rock with large fragments), breccial (rock with broken fragments)
examples of non-clastic sedimentary rock
limestone, coal, gypsum and dolomite
what does the type of clastic sedimentary rock depend on
depends on the “parent” material, the stability of mineral and the type/length of the weathering
