Lecture 6 Flashcards
What is elaborative rehearsal?
Elaborative rehearsal is the process by which the subject organises and relates new imformation to material that is already held in long term memory, this relates to long term memory being more to do with meaning.
What additions to a base sentence help make it easier/ harder to remember?
base sentences and congruent ideas are harder to remember than just the base sentence, base and elaboration are easier, if the participants were allowed to add onto the base sentence 91% would remember if the addition was meaninful or 49% if not.
What occurs for a group that has been given meaning for a paragraph compared to an uninformed group? What does this suggest?
When meaning of a paragraph is given before reading groups would have higher comprehensibility and better memory compared to an uninformed group. This is known as elaborative encoding and suggests that long term memory works better if it knows what to relate new information to.
What is a semantic network?
Semantic networks is a term to describe the relationship between words, e.g hand makes people likely to think of fingers 23% of the time. This is how information is thought to be stored in long term memory.
What is the method of loci as refers to memory?
The method of loci works by taking new information that you want to learn and associate it with locations you know very well (particularly good if you move through those locations often and in sequence), unusual interactions help with this learning method. This is typically very helpful for doing speeches without notes.
What is encoding retrieval context?
Encoding retrieval context refers to when you try to recall information in the same context as it had been learnt. Recall is better within areas of the same context as it was learnt.
What are retrograde and anterograde amnesia and what does it suggest?
Retrograde amnesia is loss of memories prior to trauma, anterograde amnesia is loss of new memories (inability to form them). These findings suggest memory is initially in a labile form and is then consolidated over time into a more damage-resistant form.
