lecture 6 Flashcards
what is exertional rhabdomyolysis
when the horses muscle are stiff and painful
- you nee to cut down NSC and increase fat
you should not feed more than 1. lb of grain/ 1000lb horse at a time
<5 lb
when looking for the proper horse diet you should look at what
- current body condition and body wight
- current workload
- current production status
- general health
you evaluate body fat in relation to body ..
musculature
what is the body condition score scale ?
1-9
when looking at the body weight what is NOT taken into account
This is a quantitative assesment -body frame - bone stucture - height The horse could be extremelly thin but have massive bone structure and be at a "resonable wieght"
When looking at the BCS what is taken into account
- This is a qualitative assesment
- takes body frame, bone structure and height into account
what area should you look at for fat accumulation
- neck
- shoulder
- withers (garôt)
- ribs
- loin
- tail-head
when will a mare have the highest energy requirement
- 11 month pregnant mare (21)
- 1st month lactating mare (31)
- 6th month lactating mare (27)
what is the thermal neutral zone
- zone at which temperature is easily controlled by the body and doesn’t really require much energy
what should be done if the body temp. is outside the TNZ
- should give energy feed to maintain normal B.T.
- adjustment in nutrient requirement
- adjustment to nutrient content of feed
- adjustment of feeding management
T or F: As a horse gets older there will be a decrease metabolic activity which will requirer an increase in nutrient requirement
False; the reason for an increase nutrient requirement would be co-morbidities
what a.a should be supplemented to the old
lysine and threonine
when feeding the old what should you give them
- chopped feed and soaked feed
- Calorie dense feed (oil, extruded feeds)
what are the comommon Co-morbidities
- teeth
- metabolic diseases
- impaired immune function
