Lecture 6 Flashcards
name the major arteries from the heart to the foot (8)
- thoracic aorta
- abdominal aorta
- common iliac artery
- external iliac artery
- femoral artery
- popliteal artery
- posterior tibial artery
- plantar arch
name the major veins from the foot to heart (6)
- plantar venous arch
- posterior tibial vein
- popliteal vein
- femoral vein
- external iliac vein
- common iliac vein
what is the tunica intima and its features?
the inner layer of blood vessels
- endothelium = a simple squamous epithelium which lines the lumen of all vessels
- sub endothelium = sparse pad of loose FCT (fibrous connective tissue) cushioning the endothelium
- internal elastic lamina = a condensed sheet of elastic tissue (well developed in arteries and less developed in veins)
what is the tunica media and its features
the middle layer of blood vessles
- made of smooth muscle
- variable content of connective tissue fibres = mainly elastin and collagen
-thickness of media is proportional to both vessel diameter and blood pressure
what is the tunica adventitia and its features?
outer layer
- loose FCT with high content of collagen and variable amount of elastin
- in larger vessels, adventitia contains the vasa vasorum
- lymphatics and autonomic nerves also found here
veins are capacitance vessels, what does this mean?
they have the ability to hold additional blood volume in times of need
what is the media layer of veins like compared to arteries?
the media layer or veins is much thinner than that of arteries
- few layers of smooth muscle
what is the adventitia of an vein like?
it is often the thickest layer of a vein
