Lecture 5: Serious Leisure Flashcards
What is Serious Leisure (SL)?
SL is the pursuit of an activity that is substantial and interesting enough for the participant to find a career within. Allows for the acquisition and expression of knowledge, skills, and experience.
what are the 6 qualities of SL?
(DULPIE)

- The need to be resilient in respect to barriers and overcoming challenges.
- Goal-directed behavior.
Leisure Career:
- Leisure role is shaped by stages of achievements.

- Must exert personal resources to obtain and develop skills and abilities.

Describe the Degrees of Seriousness in Golf as explained by Siegenthaler and O’Dell (2003). What did the study overall conclude about serious leisure?
The main conclusion was that the less serious leisure was for the participants, the less it meant for successful aging.
Degrees of Seriousness:
Core Devotees:
- Highest investment, represented all 6 qualities of SL.
- Could explain a whole bunch of benefits with their leisure.
- Projected social identity in their conversations.
- Purposeful for them.
Moderate Devotees:
- Attempt to explain they don’t take their sport as serious as others (Core Devs.).
- More emphasis on self-gratification (feeling good and enjoying sport for themselves)
- Will do something then actions portray the opposite.
- Social circle is not limited to sport.
Social Participants:
- Sport is still very important, but is IN BALANCE with other activities.
- Main reason for sport = durable and social benefits, don’t care about improving skills.
- Could swap golf for something else.
Therapeutic Participants:
- Do not embody all 6 qualities (only 2).
- Enjoy it for health benefits and perseverance.
What can SL tell us for future events?
SL can help provide clubs or event organizers with useful info in the:
- Organization, Promotion, Programming, and Experience of an activity.
