Event counseling
covers a specific event (ie. failing an APFT)
- may precede or follow events
- can be positive or negative
Performance counseling
review of a subordinate’s duty performance over a certain period
-Enlisted (E-4 and below) must be counseled MONTHLY
-NCOs and officers must be counseled QUARTERLY
Professional growth counseling
planning for the accomplishment of individual and professional goals; developmental and future-focused
3 approaches to counseling***
1) Nondirective
2) Directive
3) Combined
Nondirective approach to counseling***
leaders use experiences, insight, and judgment to assist subordinates in developing situations. Involves a dialogue with active listening
- the most preferred approach but also the most time consuming
Directive approach to counseling***
leader TELLS subordinate what to do and when to do it
-used to correct simple problems
-goes along with event counseling
Combined approach to counseling***
Uses techniques from both direct and nondirective counseling appraoches
-emphasizes the subordinate’s planning and decision-making responsibilities
The 4 stages of the counseling process***
1) identify the need for counseling
2) prepare (has 7 areas)
3) conduct
4) follow up
The 7 steps to PREPARE for counseling***
- select a suitable place
- schedule a counseling
- notify subordinate
- organize information
- outline the counseling (opening, discussion plan of action, record and close)
- plan the counseling strategy
- establish the right atmosphere
Family care counselings must be done by who?
