Lecture 5 - Anterior & Medial Thigh Muscles + Femoral Triangle Flashcards
What are the three compartements of the thigh?
Anterior compartment, medial compartment, posterior compartment
What is the membrane tissue that surrounds and seperates each compartment called? (above knee and below knee)
fascia lata (above knee) deep fascia of the leg (below knee)
what muscles fuse with the fascia lata? (2)
gluteus maximus and tensor fascia latae muscles
What action do the muscles in the anterior compartment primarily do? (2)
Extend leg at knee joint and flex thigh at hip joint
What muscles are part of the anterior compartment? (7)
psoas + illiacus (iliopsoas), rectus femoris + vasus lateralis + vastus intermedius + vastus medialis (quad muscle group), sartorius
Where does the psoas majro and iliacus become the ilipsoas?
at the inguinal ligament
Psoas major: origin
transverse process and vertebral bodies of T12-L5
Iliacus: origin
iliac fossa
Iliopsoas: insertion
lesser trochanter of femur
Iliopsoas: actions (2)
flexes the thigh at the hip joint and lateral roation of the thigh
Psoas major, Iliacus and Iliopsoas: innervation
femoral nerve
Sartorius: origin
anterior superior iliac spine
Sartorius: insertion
Medial surface of tibia
Sartorius: actions (2)
flexes thigh at hip joint and flexes leg at knee joint
Sartorius: innervation
femoral nerve
What is the sartorius muscle often refered to as and why?
the “seatbelt” muscle because it originates on the lateral side and crosses the thigh to insert on the medial side
Rectus femoris: origin
anterior inferior iliac spine
Rectus femoris: insertion
quadriceps femoris tendon
Rectus femoris: actions (2)
felxes thigh at hip joint and extends leg at knee joint
Rectus femoris: innervation
femoral nerve
What are the three “vastus” muscles?
vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius
Vastus lateralis: origin
lateral intertrochanteric line of femur
Vastus lateralis: insertion
lateral patella via quadriceps femoris tendon
Vastus lateralis: action
extend leg at knee joint
Vastus lateralis: innervation
femoral nerve
Vastus medialis: origin
medial intertrochanteric line of femur
