Dosage forms?
Oral: non sterile, patients needs to swallow
Rectal: non sterile
Topical: non sterile
Injection: sterile, tight quality control
Lungs: ease
Nasal: ease
Eye: sterile
Vaginal/urethral: ease
Types of drug entry routes?
Intravenous (vein): various volumes, quick onset
Intramuscular: vaccines, small volume, onset 10 min
Sub-cutaneous (injection just under skin): pain relief, 15 min
Intra-peritoneal (injection into body cavity): Cancer treatments, small volumes, faster than SC
Intraosseous (into bone): emergency, quick onset
Intrathecal (into spine/CNS): epidural, small volume
What needs to happen in order for drug to dissolve?
System has to create a gap before molecule can leave surface of crystal and diffuse into the gap (high energy transitional state), getting energy back when solvents attaches to solute
