Lecture 4 Flashcards
Drug?
Produces biological response, most are small molecules/not endogenous (not produced in body).
Pharmacodynamics?
What drug does to body
Pharmacokinetics?
What body does to drug
Therapeutic window?
Desired response (MEC) up to toxic response (TC) - is the safe range
Cyclo-oxygenase (COX)?
Initiates PG (prostglandin) synthesis cascade, PG synthesis increased at site of inflammation
Competitors of COX?
Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) e.g. ibuprofen = antagonist, forms stronger interactions with active site than arachidonic acid (substrate)
B2 adrenoreceptors?
Activation initiated by adrenaline and noradrenaline which dilates airways
B2A agonist (induces same response)?
Salbutamol - asthmatic patients breathe more easily.
B2A antagonist?
Atenolol
