What is mana?
Prestige, authority
What are the 4 key types of mana?
Mana tupuna/atua, Mana tuku, Mana whakatupu/whakatipu, mana wahine
What is mana tupuna/atua?
Mana inherited, via whakapapa from the atua
What is mana tuku?
Mana conferred by someone else in recognition of skills, deeds, qualities
What is mana whakatupu?
Mana accumulated through life experience
What is mana wahine?
The inherent mana of women
What is tapu?
Sacred, special, restricted
What are the 2 types of tapu?
Intrinsic & extrinsic
What is intrinsic tapu?
Tapu associated with a specific thing that comes from the atua
What is extrinsic tapu?
Tapu that can be applied or removed
What is noa?
A state free from restrictions - neutral state
What are the agents of noa?
Karakia, food, water, women
What is the word for ‘to make noa’?
whakanoa
What is utu?
Reciprocity, revenge
