At a marae, so that people can both physically and spiritually connect

What is the waerea of a powhiri?
Protective incantation/karakia performed by male guests before entering the marae
What is the wero of a powhiri?
A warrior of tangata whenua lays down a stick (raki), the manuhiri pick it up
What is the karanga part of powhiri?
Women on both sides sing back and forth to show aroha
What is the whakaeke of a powhiri?
Slow movement of the manuhiri onto the marae atea, haka powhiri may be performed
What is the whaikorero of a powhiri?
Oratory performed, usually by men, from both sides, that occurs in the realm of tumatuenga in the marea atea
What is the order of speaking in the whaikorero of a powhiri?
Hosts speak first and last (paeke), then alternating between speech and host (tautuutu)
What is the waiata tautoko of a powhiri?
The song of support, usually by women, following the whaikorero
What is the koha part of a powhiri?
When money, food, taonga, etc. is. gifted to the hosts by the manuhiri
What is the hongi part of a powhiri?
Pressing of noses and sharing ‘the breath of life’
