on holiday
• In French, when the main clause is in the future or implies a future
action/event, we do not use the present in the subordinate clause as
we do in English but we need to use the future.
• Generally, the subordinate clause is introduced by “quand”, “lorsque”,
“aussitôt que”, “tant que”, “aussi longtemps que”, “dès que” etc.
When you come, we will visit the exhibition.
Lorsque tu viendras, nous visiterons l’exposition.
We will go home as soon as it is dark.
Send me a card when you arrive.
Envoyez-moi une carte quand vous arriverez.
When the main clause implies an idea of future - for
instance when it is in the imperative form or with the
verb “espérer” in some contexts, the subordinate has
to be in the future.
I hope you can leave on time.
I’m going to come and say good night to you in 5 minutes.
Telephone me as soon as he arrives.
Appelle-moi dès qu’il arrivera.
I wonder if it will be fine tomorrow.
indirect interrogation
Je me demande s’il fera beau demain.
I will go swimming if it is fine
tomorrow. (hypothesis, therefore no future after “si”).
J’irai me baigner s’il fait beau demain.
• When the subordinate clause is in the present tense after “si”, the main clause
can be in the present tense, the future tense or the imperative. The hypothesis is
considered possible (it may rain tomorrow).
mangera
‘Si’ here indicative of a indirect question, not a hypothesis, so future is used
Tu m’écriras si tu le (pouvoir)
peux
Vous me donnerez votre nouvelle adresse si vous (déménager)
déménagez.
Je me demande si Hélène me (téléphoner) ce soir.
téléphonera
si not indicative of a hypothesis here
Si Hélène me (téléphoner), je lui donnerai rendez-vous demain matin.
