what does the pelvis include?
includes two coxal bones
sacrum, and the coccyx
the coxal bone is a union of three separate bones:
ilium, ischium, and pubis
what is the coxal also known as?
coxal

what is the ilium?
forms the large superior “hip”
what does the ischium form?
inferior ‘‘sit bones’’
what does the pubis form?
'’anterior’’ pubic bone
what forms the pelvis?
two hemipelvis’s/coxal bones + sacrum
basin like structure
superior + inferior portions separated by pelvic brim
what is the greater pelvis?
considered “false pelvis” as it’s considered part of the abdomen - does not contain pelvic organs
except for the bladder or pregnant uterus
- located superior to pelvic brim
what is the lesser pelvis?
'’true pelvis’’ lies below the pelvic brim
surrounds pelvic cavity
what is the pelvic inlet?
superior brim of the lesser pelvis
what is the pelvic outlet?
inferior opening of the lesser pelvis
what are the roles of the pelvis?
-support for the vertebral column
-transmit the force of the upper body downwards
-transmits the force of the lower body upwards
-large area for muscle attachment
-contains + protects pelvic organs
what is the primary function of the sacroiliac joint?
transmit the weight of the body from vertebral column to pelvis
