English Poor Laws
A system of poor relief developed following the Black Death. Distinguished between deserving poor and undeserving poor.
Under poor laws, who were deserving “impotent” poor?
Orphans, widows, elderly, and the disabled.
The New Poor Laws in 1834 introduced what to the poor laws?
Centralized development of workhouses.

Why weren’t Poor Laws adopted in Canada?
Colonists opposed taxation. The infrastructure for workhouses was not yet in place.
