Lecture 4 Flashcards
Energy Metabolism
What does the invertebrate digestive tract look like and how does it contrast to homeothermic animals?
They contain a gut cuticle, which helps separate sections
they also contain a ceca which is where the bacteria is that breaks down food particles consumed
They also have a hepatopancreas, which is the production if digestive enzymes
What is energy metabolism and its importance?
It’s the process in which animals acquire energy, use it and then lose it.
It can either be an anabolic process, which use the energy to construct things or catabolic, that breaks down molecules.
It is the energy conversion required within the body
What is the metabolic rate?
it is the rate at which animals to consume energy.
How does calorimetry play a role in metabolic rate?
it influences/ is a way of reading the rate of metabolism
with direct calorimetry - its heat based, where the animal is in a contained environment and its metabolic rate is based on the heat expelled
With indirect calorimetry - its based on respiratory gas exchange.
What are some factors that will influence the rate of metabolism?
physical activity, environment temperature
eating a meal, and lastly body size
What is the basal metabolic rate
Metabolic rate of a homeotherm
What is the standard metabolic rate?
metabolic rate of a poikilotherm
What is metabolic scaling and its significance?
relation between metabolic rate and body size. It is the amount of food required to maintain body function, not size proportional.
how does weight-specific metabolic rate differ from just metabolic rate?
weight specific is taking into account the metabolic rate of a specific rate of an animal, the smaller they are the more efficient due to their basal metabolic rate is a lot faster, also since the factors which effect the metabolic rate are influenced based on size.
