Lecture 1 Flashcards
Introduction
1
Q
What is so important about animal physiology?
A
It integrates all levels of organization
Biochemical -> Cellular -> Whole organism -> Evolutionary and Ecological
2
Q
What are the two ways a physiologist will approach this?
A
- Proximate/ Mechanistic Approach
- Ultimate/Evolutionary Approach
3
Q
What are the 5 time frames of physiological changes?
A
- Acute changes: short-term changes of animal after environmental changes
- Chronic changes: long-term changes in the physiology after exposure to changes, after extended periods of time
- Evolutionary changes: alteration of gene frequencies through generations
- Developmental Changes: maturation of the animal
- Periodic biological clocks: Repeating patterns, internal clock.
