Lecture 35: Psychological considerations Flashcards
How do emotional processes relate to CVD? and two examples
Emotional processes are risk factors for CVD
i.e Big earthquakes = increase in sudden cardiac death
Emotional distress = worsening CVD
Whats the psychobiological response that may drive CVD?
Stress
- Elevated HR, Vasocon in periphery, wear and tear lesions
- Increased circualting catecholamines
- Changes in lipids
- Stress hormones i.e cortisol, adrenaline linked to inflam of coronaries
How else does psychology come in to CVD?
Psychology impacts behaviour which can influence disease outcome i.e non-compliance, doctors visits, poorer health habits, less motivation, less social, poor adherance
What should we do regarding feelings / reactions to CVD?
Normalise common psychological reactions following cardiac events
Screen early for psychological considerations to allow intervention and optimal recovery . adherence etc
