What is ‘hypertension’?
It is a continuous function i.e at the extremes it is definitely bad regardless of person but in the spectrum the risk it poses depends on the persons contraindications
What are measurements of blood pressure affected by?
Time of day, Month, Year
Diet
Age
Location
What are the causes of hypertension?
- > 95% Lifestyle
- Kidney disease
- Adrenal disease
- Co-arctation of the aorta
- Other
What is important of the co-arctation of the aorta?
Radio-femoral pulse delay.
Explains hypertension in young people
How do we currently diagnose hypertension?
3 visits, average of two.
- i.e 180/105 see in a few weeks
- i.e 250/130 see same day or send hospital
What is the treatment of hypertension?
- Treatment is negotiable
- Changing lifestyle factors; Alcohol, smoking, high salt, stress?, steroids, NSAIDS, sudomyl, exercise
- Drug therapy
What are some drug therapies for hypertension?
ACE inhibitors ARBs Ca channel blockers Diuretics Beta blockers etc
What is best treatment for patients?
Patients find drugs easiest, exercise second, but smoking cessation is most effect
What is the best treatment for hypertension at a population level?
Salt and alcohol reduction
