Describe the occurrence of psedumonas aeruginosa
found everywhere
nosocomial infection
oppertunist
very,very resistant to triclosan (super bug)
Name some examples of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections
wound infections (14% of patient deaths with bacteremia, 75% of burn victim deaths)
superficial skin infections (athlete’s foot, bed sores, eczema, hot tub dermatitis)
UTI (complicated- instrumentation)
eye infections (contact lenses)
pneumonia
osteomyolitis
OTIC (ear)- swimmer’s ear
How do you treat Pseudomonas infections?
UTI- Ciprofloxacin
Other- gentimycin and ticarcillin (synergism)
Describe bordetella pertussis
causes whooping cough in kids under 7
spasmodic cough- can lead to lung collapse, death
DTaP vaccine for kids
Tdap vaccine for adolescents
Treat with erythromycin, azithromycin, or clarithromycin
Describe legionella pneumophila
legionnaire’s disease- atypical pneumonia
ID50 is 1
associated with dirty water (air conditioners)
DOC is azithromycin
