Lecture 32 - Heart Failure Flashcards
Typical symptoms of heart failure?
shortness of breath, exercise limitation and fatigue, peripheral and/or pulmonary congestion - with cardiac structure or function abnormality
HF physical findings?
tachycardia, elevated JVP, third heart sound, peripherl oedema
Reduced ejection fraction?
systolic heart failure - weakenedd heart muscles causes less blood pumped out of ventricles (men)
Preserved ejection fraction?
diastolic heart failure - stiff heart muscles means ventricles filled less (women)
Normal ejection fraction?
50-75%
Laplace’s Law prediction - HFrEF?
increasing radius leads to increased tension
Laplace’s Law prediction - HFpEF?
increasing wall thickness reduces tension, but at expense of filling
