Lecture 26 - Vascular Function Flashcards
Pressure drop?
across small arteries and arterioles
Area velocity relationship?
inverse proportionality
Largest surface rea?
capillaries
Determinants of blood viscosity?
temperature, haematocrit (RBC portion), shear rate (sludging of RBC at v low velocity), vessel diameter
Assumptions of Poisseuille’s equation?
steady laminar flow, newtonian flow, rigid straight tube
Shear stress?
as flow increases, stress on endothelium increases, causing NO release and vasodilation - potential risk of damage
Reynolds number increases if?
increased diameter, increased flow or decreased resistance
Bernoulli’s Principle?
total energy of laminar flow is constant and euals sum of: pressure energy, potential energy and kinetic energy (some energy loss due to heat)
Transmural pressure?
pressure inside - pressure outside
Aneurysm?
thinning of vessel wall, radius increase, wall tension increase, viscous circle
