Lecture 32- Fungi Flashcards
are fungi more related to plants or animals?
animals
fungi are heterotrophic, what does that mean?
they get their energy from other organisms (in this case, through absorption)
what are the two body structures of fungi?
septate hypha
coenocytic hypha
what does the septate hypha body structure consist of?
divided into cells by septa
pores (help with cell to cell movement of organelles)
what does the coenocytic hyphae body structure consist of?
continuous cytoplasmic mass (no septa or divisions)
many nuclei
what do both body structures of fungi have in common? (2)
maximize SA for absorption (highly branched)
cell wall contains chitin
how do fungi reproduce?
sexually and asexually
how do fungi reproduce asexually?
molds develop and produce haploid spores by mitosis
what are two phyla in fungi?
ascomycetes
basidiomycetes
where do ascomycetes live?
thrive in cool and damp environment
marine
freshwater
terrestrial
how do ascomycetes reproduce sexually?
spores are produced internally
produce sexual spores in asci
how do ascomycetes reproduce asexually?
through conidia
what are examples of basidiomycetes?
mushrooms
puffballs
plant paracites
