- Context-level information-superficial, surface level information
- Relationship level information-Deals with the sender’s attitude toward the receiver and toward the relationship between them

Is a creation of shared meaning that can be verbal, nonverbal, intentional, unintentional, process and/or behavior, public and/or private

Encoding
A
- Both occur simultaneously
- Before encoding we plan a message-Setting a goal, and choosing among strategies to achieve that goal
- Then we encode and send message via some channel

A
Messages directed at you are selectively perceived in process. Perception and processing are prone to noise and various biases such as: recency bias; selective exposure bias
