How do we prepare for the Probing process?
With Active listening:
Listen for:
Experiences - what has happened
Patterns of behaviour - How the client has behaved or responded to a situation
Patterns of thought - What beliefs they have about themselves, other people, events in their lives, as well as what sense they make of their own and others’ behaviours.
Feelings, emotions and moods - Their feelings as they tell their story
Strengths and resources - Clients have strengths and resources not only problems.
Non-verbal messages -Cues as facial expressions, body movements and voice tone.
How do we respond to Active Listening?
Head nodding Encouragers Paraphrasing Summarising Using Keywords said by the client Ask questions
What is SOLER?
Sit squarely Open posture Lean in and Lean back occasionally Eye contact Relax and be Natural
Probing - Case formulation - Components
Identify Vulnerability or predisposing factors - Biological, personality, socialization
Identify Precipitants - Events or symptoms in the PAST - exacerbated the client’s condition
Identify Triggers - Events or symptoms in the PRESENT - pushes the client over the edge
Identify Problem - Current event that pushes the client over the edge into exhibiting dysfunctional behaviour - it is recurring
Identify Perpetuating factors -Reinforcers that increase or maintain a client’s dysfunctional behaviour.
Identify Preventive factors - Adaptive coping strategies which clients use to deal with their problem.
What is a dysfunctional behaviour?
If the behaviour is trigged by an activating event
If the abnormal behaviour rewards the client
If there are any thoughts and actions that they trigger the behaviour
The behaviour punishes the client in the long run - sabotage effect
