Where does Modern CBT originates from?
Behaviour therapy

Cognitive therapy
What is behaviour therapy?
Therapy that focuses on the importance of behaviour change in overcoming mental health problems
What is Cognitive therapy?
Therapy that focuses on understanding and changing the meaning of events
Why do problems occur?
Because the interaction of 4 systems:
- cognitive system
- Behavioural system
- Affective system
- Physiological system
What is the Cognitive System?
What a person thinks, imagines and believes
What is the Behavioural System?
What a person do or say that can directly be observed by others.
What is the Affective System?
What a person feels, their emotions.
What is the Physiological System?
What happens to their body, such as autonomic arousal or changes in appetite.
How many levels of Cognitions are?
There are 3 levels of cognitions:
- Negative automatic thoughts
- Dysfunctional assumptions
- Core beliefs
What are Negative Automatic Thoughts?
Specific thoughts that arise spontaneously in various situations, which have a negative effect on mood, and which are relatively accessible to consciousness.
What are Dysfunctional Assumptions? or (Negative Intermediate beliefs NIB)?
There are “rules for living’ that guide behaviour and expectations in a variety of situations, and which are often in conditional “if……..then” form.
What are Core Beliefs?
There are general beliefs about oneself , other people or the world in general, which operate across a wide range of situation but which are often not immediately conscious.
