What is the Pharmacy Services Standard?
The quality of the system through which pharmacy services are to be delivered. It is part of the Health and Disability Services Standards 2008.
What is the purpose of the Pharmacy Services Standard?
Foundation for describing good practice and fostering continuous improvement in the quality of pharmacy services
What does the ‘Delivery of Pharmacy Services’ relies on?
- The competence of the pharmacists

What are the minimum quality standards for the delivery of services?
Safe and reasonable actions that result in the efficient and effective use of available resources to achieve quality outcomes and minimise risk for the consumer
Aims of Pharmacy Services Standard
- Consumers receive safe and appropriate services that comply with consumer rights legislation
- Consumers receive timely services which are planned, coordinated and delivered in an appropriate manner
Services are managed in a safe, efficient and effective manner which complies with legislation - Services are provided in a clean, safe environment which is appropriate for the needs of the consumers

Consumer oriented-services
incorporates the principles of consumer-oriented pharmacy care set out in the Pharmacy Council Code of Ethics
Organisational Management
Consumers receive services that comply with legislation are managed in a safe, efficient, and effective manner
Continuum of Service Delivery
Consumers receiving pharmacy services, including dispensing, participate in and receive timely assessment, followed by services that are planned, coordinated, and delivered in a timely and appropriate manner, consistent with current legislation
Safe and Appropriate Environment
Services are provided in a clean, safe environment that is appropriate to the needs of the consumer group, and meets the needs of the people with disabilities.
Dispensing, Compounding, Repackaging & Batch Preparation
Dispensing, compounding, repackaging and batch preparation practices in pharmacies have clearly defined procedures and are organised so that appropriate qualified staff, premises, equipment and materials are used according to the requirements of the individual preparation
Difference between Pharmacist Competency Standards & Pharmacy Services Standard
- Competency Standards relate to the standard of service provided by the pharmacists
- Pharmacy Service Standard sets minimum quality standards for the delivery of a service from pharmacy
What is extemporaneous compounding?
Medicines made from scratch in the exact strength and dosage form required by the patient’s specific needs.
Extemporaneously compounded products usually prescribed for an individual patient on a prescription from an prescriber.
Reasons for compounding
- unavailability of appropriate dosage
- unable to take medicines in standardised forms
- allergic to particular ingredients
- specialised veterinary products
