Lecture 3 Flashcards
Definition of wavelength:
The length of space that one wave occupies.
For the graph that displays wavelength, what is found on the X and Y axis?
X axis - Distance/particle motion.
Y axis - Pressure or amplitude.
Wavelength equation:
Wavelength = Speed/Frequency
Shorter wavelengths (higher frequencies) produce:
Better resolution and poorer penetration.
Wavelength is affected by:
The source of sound (transducer frequency) and the medium.
T/F: The speed that sound travels through a medium is dependent on the frequency of the wave.
False
Which variable has the greatest effect on the speed that a wave travels through a medium?
Bulk modulus.
As stiffness increases, the speed of sound:
Increases.
As density decreases, the speed of sound:
Increases.
Impedance equation:
Z = PC Impedance = Density x Speed
Impedance increases if:
Propagation speed or density increases.
Two properties of medium that affects speed of sound:
- Hardness of medium (Stiffness, Bulk Modulus).
2. Density of medium.
When density increases, the speed of sound:
Decreases.
