Lecture 3 Flashcards
The Brain
The Hindbrain, Midbrain, Forebrain
The Hindbrain
□ Medulla
□ Pons □ Cerebellum
The Midbrain
□ Reticular Formation
□ Tectum □ Tegmentum
Forebrain
Thalamus Hypothalamus Limbic System Amygdala Hippocampus Septal Area Basal Ganglia Cerebrum
Medulla
® Regulates automatic function, circulation, breathing, muscle tone, reflexes, sneezing and salivating
Hard to live with out the medulla
Pons
regulates sleeping walking and dreaming
Cerebellum
® Balance and coordination of movement, analyze sensory info; may play a role in remembering simple skills, problem solving
Reticular Formation
® Moduleates muscle reflexes, pain persception, active in states of arousal, consciousness.
® Damage to this area may result in comas
Tectum
® Auditory and visual responses that help orient an organism in the environment
Tegmentum
® Controls some motor functions , regulates awareness and attention and some automatic function
Thalamus
® Relays motor impulses out of the brain
® Direct incoming sensory messages to higher centers
Hypothalamus
® Hunger, thirst, emotion, sex and reproduction, body temp and automatic nervous system
® Feeding, fighting, fleeing, mating
◊ Pituitary Gland: master gland governed by the hypothalamus; involved in temp regulation, thyroid activity, growth, testosterone and production
Limbic System
® Loosely interconnected structures involved in emotions
® No clear boundaries
Amygdala
® Evaluates sensory info, linked to fear responses, emotional events
Hippocampus
formation and storage of new memories
