Effect on tasks
A lot of cocaine is good for easy tasks, a little bit of cocaine is good for complex tasks
Effects of paranoia
More paranoid on chronic use, inability to recognize reality, hallucinate, limited patterns of thought
What is the behavioral pathology of psychostimulants?
Parkinson’s like symptoms, akathisia, akinesia, and tremonrs
Akathisia
Urge to be in movement
Akinesia
Lack of movement
Dyskinetic Movements
Abnormal, involuntary movements
Skin Picking
Thinking there are bugs under your skin and picking away at them
Physical Effects of Psychostimulant
Increased heart rate, overdose can cause heart attack, increased blood pressure, increased body temperature, dilated bronchi
Psychostimulant cycle of addiction
Start with euphoric feelings, withdrawal is very dysphoric so take more to be euphoric, after a while instead of dysphoria you experience paranoia and psychosis (feeling REALLY bad now isntead of just bad)
Withdrawal (1-2 days) symptoms
Dysphoria, lethargy and sleepiness, increased irritability and anxiety, and suicidal tendencies
Dysphoria (7-10 days) symptoms
Depression, anxiety and cravings (situational dependence)
Treatment
First detox, then use cocaine group therapy, 85% relapse after a year, and 75% treated relapse after a year
