10-31-13 Flashcards
Psychedelic
Mind clearing or mind expanding. More potent than marijuana
Hallucinogen
Means seeing things that aren’t there
Psychotomimetic
To mimic psychosis
What is LSD
LSD is a synthetic drug, all the other ones are derived from plants
How potent is LSD?
LSD is 100-1000 more potent than any of the other psychedelic drugs
How long are the half-lives of psychedelic drugs?
All of them have very long half-lives except for DMT, which is very short acting (30 min)
What is the first thing people experience with psychedelics?
Autonomic effects, they all have a little bit of a stimulant effect and affect the sympathetic nervous system (increase heart rate). Always a slight sympathetic response that precedes the psychedelic effects
What are the 4 stages of a psychedelic trip?
- Sensory Stage
- Recollective-analytical stage
- Symbolic Stage
- Integral Stage
- Sensory Stage
Objects take on a visual tinge, everything is enhanced in your perception, space and time distorted (seems to last forever) and synethesia is more dramatic
- Recollective-Analytical Stage
Remember things that were presumably forgotten or repressed thoughts or feelings. This experience is carried back into sober reality and changes the person, person is forced to think in a new way. Have a long-term memory of what happened
- Symbolic Stage
Profound change to sense of self and depersonalization
Depersonalization
When your ego separates from your body, so your feelings and perceptions seem to belong to someone else or no one, you don’t know who you are anymore. Its like watching yourself
- Integral Stage
Profound state of serenity and contemplation (for an eternal moment), unity with god or the essence of the universe. The white light.
What can ecstasy do?
Argument that ecstasy produces the symbolic and integral stage without the first two and the depersonalization stage, it binds you more with the universe and other humans (emphathogen) amphetamine derivative
Behavioral Toxic Effects
Flashbacks, metaphysical bad trips, and psychosis. All are minor
What is a flashback?
Sudden re-occurrence to the LSD experience long after it happened, short phenomenon, can still happen long after drug has worn off and cleared your body
What causes a flashback?
Entering a dark environment, thinking about having one, and marijuana (marijuana won’t cause flashbacks to marijuana experience.
What is a metaphysical bad trip
Can range from a panic reaction to full blown psychosis. Has to do with how you go into your psychedelic experience. Fixed intense emotion and distortion of reality that seems to last forever
What happens when you inject DMT
As powerful as LSD but less potent, when injected it will propel you dramatically into the later stages and be short in action
What is psychosis?
LSD can produce a psychotic like state if someone ingests it without knowing or if they are vulnerable to LSD (had a psychosis attack before)
How is tolerance to psychedelics?
Rapid tolerance, repeated doses become nothing after 3-4 days, but then tolerance also disappears just as quickly
What is cross tolerance?
Outside of your drug class, there is tolerance, if you did LSD 3 days in a row, and you try mushrooms, you will get less of an effect to the mushrooms too, but not marijuana
What is the abuse and addiction potential of psychedelics?
Abuse depends on the circumstances and is common. Addiction is rare and withdrawal symptoms are not pronounced sinc ethe tolerance building is so dramatic
