Addiction
CHRONICALLY RELAPSING disorder that is characterized by a COMPULSION to seek and take drug or stimulus, LOSS OF CONTROL IN LIMITING INTAKE, and emergence of a NEGATIVE EMOTIONAL STATE when access to the drug or stimulus is prevented (dark side)
Negative Emotional State
Dysphoria, anxiety, and irritability
Physical Dependence
An adaptive state that manifests itself by intense physical disturbances when the administration of a drug is suspended (withdrawal or abstinence syndromes) made of a specific arrays of symptoms and signs of psychic and physical nature that are characteristic for each drug type.
Psychological Dependence
A condition in which a drug produces a feeling of satisfaction and a psychic drive that require periodic or continuous administration of the drug to produce pleasure or to avoid discomfort

Now had 11 criteria, combined abuse and dependence, removed the “legal problems” and added the new “craving or strong desire to use”
Mild
2-3 criteria
Moderate
4-5 criteria

Dependence among users
Gives you an idea of addictability among users, tobacco is the highest and heroin is the second highest
Reinforcement
Process by which an event INCREASES the probability of a given response
Positive Reinforcement
PRESENTATION of an event increases the probability of a response (child cleans room and gets candy) presents candy (event), more likely to clean room (response)
Negative Reinforcement
TERMINATION of an event decreases the probability of a response
Punishment
Presentation of an event decreases the probability of a response
