Lecture 27: Heart Failure 1 Flashcards
What causes inappropriate workload?
Both volume and pressure overload
What causes impaired myocyte contraction?
ischaemic heart disease and dilated cardiomyopathy
What is the most common cause of heart failure?
Impaired systolic function
What causes systolic dysfunction?
Increased preload, and inadequate contractile function
What causes diastolic dysfunction?
Restricted filling and impaired relaxation
What causes combined systolic and diastolic dysfunction?
Increased afterload
What is compensated heart failure?
When the patient is a-symptomatic
What is decompensated heart failure?
When the cardiac output fails to increase
What leads to the buildup of fluid in the air sacs?
Backward failure / left sided heart failure
What is dyspnea?
Sensation of breathlessness
What is pulmonary oedema?
Decreased gas exchange resulting in atrial hypoxemia
What are the features of left sided heart failure?
Dyspnea, suffocation when sleeping, and blood-like cough
What are the effects of right heart failure
Enlarged spleen, abdominal enlargement, edema
What is ankle swelling a symptom of?
Right-sided heart failure
