Lecture 26 Flashcards
What is a code?
A system of words, letters, or signs used to represent something
e.g. participant identifiers, speech
What is introspection?
The examination of one’s own conscious thoughts/feelings
What is subitising?
Using rapid, accurate, and confident judgements of number
-refers to feeling of instantly knowing how many items are in a visual scene
What number of items does subitising work for?
For small number of items (1-4)
What does Subitising suggest?
Suggests awareness of stimuli through vision and that substituting is ‘pre-attentive’
What is pre-attentive?
The unconscious accumulation of information from the environment, not consciously remembered
What happens to response time when you increase the amount of words in a list?
It decreases by 1/4 second per item
What is counting and when does it occur?
Attentional, occurs with a set of 5-7 unrelated items
What is attention?
The allocation of limited processing resources
When there is large variance in information, how are we in terms of what’s going to happen? What does this cause?
We are ignorant about what’s going to happen. Causes us to get lots of information when we make an observation
When there is small variance in information, how are we in terms of what’s going to happen? What does this cause?
We know how our observation turns out therefore little information from making the observation
The measure of transmitted info is a measure of…
The input-output correlation
What does the asymptotic value represent?
Channel capacity of the observer
