Exploring the unknown within a context
Describe data in qualitative research
- Quotes/images capturing original quality of the data
- Non-numeric
- Involved the ‘human experience’
Is qualitative research inductive or deductive?
Inductive.
Doesn’t starts with a hypothesis, this is formed from within the data
What is a theme?
A patterned response or meaning within the data set
What is a theme referred to as?
A category or dominant discourse
How is a theme found?
Found by systematic searching within the data
What is ontology the views of?
Human Reality
(Ontology)
In quantitate research what is the theory?
Realism - there is one true reality independent of perception
(Ontology)
In qualitative research what is the theory?
Relativism - people’s realities differ relative to perception
->behaviour can be the same but experienced differently
(Epistemology)
In quantitative research what is the theory?
Positivism - knowledge is waiting to be discovered and is then considered ‘true’ until disproven through research
(Epistemology)
In qualitative research what is the theory?
Social Construction - knowledge is being generated by attempts to explain the human world, this includes research
Describe Data Gathering and Analysis in quantitate data
- Mostly closed questions
- Large samples
- Tests specific hypothesis
Describe Data Gathering and Analysis in qualitative data
- Mostly open ended questions
- Specific sample group
- Looking to explore people’s experiences
What do closed questions imply?
A fixed answer i.e. yes/no
What do open questions invite?
Expansion
