Q

What are the three primary types of media-elicitation studies?

A
  1. Researcher-led media-elicitation: Media stimuli pre-selected by researchers. Can be real media or mock media
  2. Participant-led: Can be spontaneously mentioned or requested. Media gathered by participants – can be done in real time
  3. Primary media analysis: no participants, just media

Q

What is the difference between photo elicitation and media elicitation?

A

Rather than using photos as interview prompts, you instead use media stimuli to get your participant talking or analyse the media directly

Q

If you are getting participants to talk about their opinions of celeb photos on Facebook is this photo elicitation or media elicitation?

A

-Media: it is done in the context of a social media platform. It’s not focused on the photo themselves but instead the wider context of the social media platform.

Q

Does the platform we are shown information on matter?

A

Yes, greatly. Some media analysis studies look at this by putting mock media under different company banners/ site and seeing how this effects the participants view of the subject matter.

Q

How does media relate to culture?

A

Media is heavily embedded in the current culture as it circulates discourses relevant to the time/place. This is often why local shows do really well (people relate).

A

Patterns of language that circulate versions of ‘reality’
Shared versions of ‘how things are’ (here and now and why)

Q

Carry out a media analysis of the movie insight out…
How are ‘codes’ about gender communicated in Inside Out?
-How are codes similar to discourses?
-How might those codes be internalized by children watching?

A
  • Assertive dad and nurturing Mum. Mum more involved in raising Riley and is the support network of the family. Dad doesn’t display much emotion aside from anger . Also generally light/ bright colours used for the females and dark/ neutral colours for the males.
  • Riley is gender neutral with colors, personality and behaviors (even her name puts this across) to contrast with these codes
  • Socialization= the process by which we learn and internalize the values, beliefs and norms of our culture and, in doing so, develop a sense of self.

-Codes= subtle cues, not entire themes by themselves but point to wider/ bigger issue

Q

How could the media analysis of inside out be changed to use different methods of media analysis?

A

-Possible researcher-led media-elicitation study:
Showing Inside Out then having interviews or focus groups

-Possible participant-led media-elicitation study:
Asking participants to bring and share media on the topic of
gender and emotions

There is no set way to do things just have to think it through
