Lecture 2.11 Diagnosing Infection Flashcards
1
Q
What is the best way to diagnose?
A
Isolate bacteria
2
Q
What do resp viruses do?
A
Leave antigen on surface of host cell and take some cell membrane to coat themselves
3
Q
What is MALDI-TOF?
A
Bacteria placed on metal plate, 2 mins there is a readout of what bacteria is present (mixed cultures cannot be interpreted)
4
Q
What are the features of MacConkey agar?
A
Contains bile salts (bacteria don’t like), indicator medium - indicating the ability of the bacteria to ferment lactose (fermenters exhibit hot pink colour)
5
Q
What are the features of blood agar?
A
Bacteria can produce toxins that lyse the red cells - clear agar = beta haemolysis (green agar = alpha haemolysis)
