Lecture 21: Finding Human Genes File Flashcards
Whats the relationship between the distance of the STRs in gene mapping and the % of inheritance ?
The closer the STRs, the higher the % of inheritance
e.g. The nearest STR’s will be inherited at about 100% with phenotype
What is a candidate gene ?
a gene that (when mutant) might cause the mutant phenotype we observe
What are the two candidate genes for inappropriate aggression ?
Monoamine Oxidase-A (MOXA)
Monoamine Oxidase-B (MOXB)
What are the functions of MOXA and MOXB?
they metabolise excess neurotransmitters, which ‘calms’ the fight or flight response
What do MOXA and MOXB have in common ?
They both have identical intron/exon structure of 15 exons
They lie next to each other in a head - tail orientation
What are the relative activities of MOXA and MOXB ?
MOXA = 85% MOXB = 15%
How would you make a transgenic MOXA mouse mutant ?
Create a deletion in mouse MOXA, which removes exons 2&3
What chromosome is mouse MOXA on ?
X
What does MOXA in rhesus monkeys show ?
It shows naturally occuring variation in MOXA activity
