Lecture 21 Flashcards
Equilibrium
Same as surroundings
Disequilibrium
Not in equilibrium, tend to change until they reach equilibrium.
Collision Theory
Molecules must collide to react together. 1. collision has enough energy to start to break the bonds holding reactant molecules together and 2. Whether the reacting molecules collide in the proper orientation for new bonds to form.
Effective collisions
Must meet both conditions of collision theory to be effective collisions. Higher of the frequency of effective collisions, the faster the rate.
Activation energy
Minimum energy needed for collision to be effective. Lower the activation energy, the faster the reaction will be.
Kinetic Energy Factor
Must have sufficient kinetic energy so that when they collide, it can form the activated complex.
Chemical equilibrium using aA and bB
aA + bB <–> cC +dD. -> Forward reaction and backward/reverse reaction
The rate of forward and reverse reactions are ____ at equilibrium
equal
the concentration sof reactants and products are _____
NOT equal. Some reach equilibrium only after almost all the reactant molecules are consumed (product favored) and some reach equilibrium only when a small perentage of the reactant molecultes are consumed (reactant favored)
Equilibrium constant
Ratef = Kf [A]a[B]b
Rater=Kr[C]c[D]d
Kf[A]a[B]b=kr[C]c[D]d
Kf [C]c[D]d [C]c[D]d
—- = ———— and Keq = ————
Kr [A]a[B]b [A]a[B]b
