Lecture 2: Vertebral Column Flashcards
number of vertebrae in vertebral column
33 7 cervical 12 thoracic 5 lumbar 5 sacral 4 coccyx
Joints that connect vertebrae to one another
superior and inferior articular processes (zygopophyses)
The lamina between the superior and inferior articular processes
pars interarticularis
Typical cervical vertebrae
c3-c6
c1 (atlas)
c2 (axis)
c7 (vertebra prominens)
part of cervical vertebrae that can osteophyte to cause neck pain
uncus (uncinate process)
This ligament is absent in those with down syndrome
transverse ligament of the atlas
These vertebrae have costal facets for rib insertion
Thoracic vertebrae
These vertebrae feature a mammilary process for attachment of multifidus muscle
Lumbar vertebrae
Abnormal increase of thoracic curvature
Kyphosis
Abnormal increase in in lumbar curvature
Lordosis
Lateral curvature in vertebral column
Scoliosis
Partial forward dislocation of a vertebra over the vertebra below it
Spondylolisthesis
Bilateral fractures of the pars interarticularis of the vertebral laminae . “Scottie dog”
Spondylolysis
Ligament that helps to limit extension of the vertebral column. whiplash injury
Anteriol longitudinal ligament (ALL)
Ligament along the posterior aspect of the bodies and intervertebral discs; it helps limit flexion
Posterior longitudinal Ligament (PLL)
Ligament joining the laminae of adjacent vertebrae; they help limit flexion and assist with extension of the flexed column
ligamenta flava
Ligament between adjacent spinous processes
Interspinous ligaments
Ligament connects the tips of spinous processes C7 to the sacrum
Supraspinous ligaments
Expanded ligament in cervical region, Serves for muscle attachments It supports the head , resists flexion and facilitates returning the head to anatomical position.
nuchal ligament (ligamentum nuchae)
IV disc central part
nucleus pulposus
IV disc outer part
annulus fibrosus
