Lecture 2 - Human Brain Capabilities Flashcards
What are the 3 capabilities of the human brain?
- memory
- cogntion
- memory
What is perception?
First stage of processing in the brain, which is just after sensing. Associations and meanings start to take shape
What is JND?
Just noticeable difference
the threshold at which people stop perceiving difference
Why do we care about JNd?
As we want to know what the users can tell apart before implementing a change
What are illusions?
when our perception fills in the gaps in ambigous stimuli making it look different than it actually is
What senses are tricked with illusions?
visual , aural , aptic
Common illusions are to do with..
depth perception
What is cognition?
human process of concious intellectual activity
- thinking , reasoning , deciding
Can illusions be used to improve usability?
yes , but rarely
What is memory?
Ability to store , retain , recall information
What is the short term memory capacity?
7 +/- 2
used to guide design
