Lecture 2 Flashcards
Body mass equation
Fat mass + lean body mass
Most abdundant element in a body
Oxgen
4 main tissue type in TISSUE MODEL
Muscle, Nervous, connective, epithelial
Human body is made up to 3 major structure (Structural Model)
Muscle, Bone, Fat
Anthorpometry
Quantitative measure of body size and proportions
Two-component model
Amount of fat and fat free mass
Chemical Model
Fat, protein , mineral , carbohydrate and water
Essential fat
fat that is required for normal physiological functioning - structural components of cell membranes, required for the synthesis of certain hormones, transport of fat-soluble vitamins, etc.
storage fat
fat that is stored in adipose tissue for energy supply purposes. It is located underneath the skin, in the abdominal cavity, and around certain organs.
Male vs female essential fat
female = 12% male = 3%
Male vs female storage fat
female = 15% male = 12%
Male type obesity (android)
excess fat is deposited on the upper torso and around the abdomen – apple shape. Male type obesity is associated with higher health risks.
Female type obesity (gynoid)
excess fat is deposited below the waist in the thighs, hips, and buttocks (ie) pear shape. After menopause females begin depositing more fat in the abdominal area
As we age
Increased fat mass,
Decreased muscle mass
Decreased bone mass
Cause of Obesity epidemic
- Too much food too little activity
- Decreased physical activity
- Increased in consumption of calories
- Social enviornment
- Genetics
