Lecture 2 Flashcards
What is newtons first law?
An object will stay at rest unless a force acts upon it
Newtons second law
F=ma
What is the force equation
Force=mass x acceleration
What is work?
Mechanical energy required to move
What is the work equation?
Work= force x distance
What is power?
The amount of work over a given amount of time
What is the power equation?
Power = work/time
What is efficiency?
A measure of how much energy actually goes into the movement
What is the efficiency equation?
Efficiency = energy in/energy out
How do muscles work?
by shortening
What is striated muscle?
A muscle made of sarcromeres with a striped appearance
What is myosin?
A protein known for its role in muscle contraction with two heads and a long tail
Where is myosin found?
Myosin creates thick filament
What forms thin filament?
Actin and tropomyosin
What is a fascicle?
A bundle of muscle fibres
What is a pennation angle?
Pennation angle is the angle between the longitudinal axis of the entire muscle and its fibers
What is moment arms?
The moment is a force that produces a turning motion,increasing this creates larger movements
Where do muscles usually act?
On hard tissues eg bones
What is stress?
Force,normalised to the area it acts on
What is strain?
Deformation,normalised
What is compression?
Pressure from both ends
What is tension?
Pulling
What is torsion?
twisting
What is bending?
pressure from the middle
What are safety factors?
Ratio of the structures strength to maximum stress it is likely to encounter
When does stress increase?
With size
