Lecture 2 Flashcards
results of study on Mitt Romney
stronger supporters produces visualizations judges to appear more trustworthy
results of study where participants see police arresting 2 guys
among subjects who paid more attention (more fixations), stronger police identification predicted less punishment
What did Wicker (1969) found, that sent shockwaves through the field
He found that attitudes only weakly predicted behavior
in response to Wicker (1969), focus on attitude strength & moderators. give examples of moderators
factors that contribute to attitude strength:
- importance
- accessibility
- extremity
- certainty/confidence
- stability
behavior-focused approach
the idea that the object attitudes are not necessarily related to behaviors. You might like ice cream but you’re not always eating ice cream. So focus on attitudes towards the behavior is a more effective method of behavioral prediction (specification of action and target, sometimes also specification of context and time)
Theory of Reasoned Action
Attitude and subjective norms lead to behavioral intention, which leads to the behavior
Theory of Planned Behavior (what are the four major predictors of behavior)
Attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control lead to behavioral intention, which leads to the behavior
What’s something else that was not mentionned in the two theories that is also important to predict behaviors (that are probably the most important thing)
Goals!!
What’s a really good strategy to elicit specific behaviour
Implementation intentions: speeling out when, where and how of goal striving in advance.
