Lecture 2 Flashcards
tissue =
group of cells which perform a specific function
4 basic types of tissue
- epithelium - cellular sheet - protection
- connective - fibrous - support
- muscle - proteins - movement
- neural - electrically conductive - pathway of connections
4 main functions of epithelia sheets
- protection - ex. skin - barriers
- absorption - ex. intestines - bring things in
- secretion - ex. glands - product needs to be pushed somewhere to be absorbed - NEED
- excretion - ex. kidney - everything you get rid of - DONT NEED
5 main characteristics of epithelial tissues
- cellular
- polarity - different places
- basement membrane
- avascular - “without” - diffusion
- regeneration - when one dies, another comes
what does the mucous membrane do
it lines cavities and surfaces that are exposed to the external environment and keeps them MOIST
examples: GI, respiratory, UG
external environment -> internal tube -> body is internal environment
the body is basically a DONUT
what does the serous membrane do
covers organs and lines body cavities & produces a lubricant to aid the organs as they move
example: pleural, peritoneal, pericardial cavities
characteristics: shrink wrapped and one cell layer thick
what does the synovial membrane do
lines joint cavities and provides for exchange of fluids and solutes between the joint cavity & adjacent tissues
examples: it’s engine oil, without the oil, the engine burns up
responsible for getting nutrients to other places
what does the cutaneous “membrane” do
ITS SKIN
covers the body
characteristics: thick, relatively waterproof, abrasion resistant
