Lecture 17 - Treatment of Conduct Problems Flashcards
Why should treatments target the ecology of the child?
They must address the relationship processes and behaviour settings of the child. Treatments that do not do so are less effective in the long term.
Why should treatments incorporate a developmental approach in treatment?
Incorporates the best time for interventions, which family variables to target and how to incorporate the child.
What is best to be done in early childhood?
Best time for intervention, before the behaviour can be generalized. At middle childhood, school must be incorporated. Early childhood just focuses on the coercive reinforcement cycle.
What is best to be done in adolescence?
Focus on the child as an active participant. Child-parent dynamic should be strengthened as usual tactics are weak when the child has gone through physical developments.
What does a hypothesis driven treatment entail?
Distal problems (family adversity) become proximal problems (disrupted parenting practices) which become conduct problems.
What is the primary motivator behind Behavioural Parent Training?
Most effective RCT in treating ODD children. Positive reinforcement is used when the child is behaving well, using effective discipline style. Attachment is the primary reward here (absence of attachment when naughty). Still effective at 6 months follow up.
What is the best way to do Time Out?
Best done in a separate room that is boring, safe and neutral. Time out ends when the child is behaving well again. Time out is only effective when ‘time’ in is positive.
