lecture 17 Flashcards
1
Q
define lymphedema
A
- swelling that occurs in one or more extremity
2
Q
cause of lymphedema
A
- caused by removal of or damage to lymph nodes as part of cancer tx
- results from blockage in the lymphatic system that prevents lymph from draining appropriately and build up of fluid
3
Q
treating lymphedema
A
- examination to determine how we can help a patient with lymphedema TAKES TIME
- Tx designed to relieve regional lymphatic congestion TAKES TIME
- RESULTS MAY BE SLOW
4
Q
what are the causative factors in lymphedema
A
- genetically sparse nodes/channels
- ongoing disease causing direct or indirect effects on lymphatic system
- DAMAGED NODES/lymphatic channels
- SURGICAL REDUCTION of number of nodes
- TISSUE DAMAGE restricting flow (scarring/radiation)
- lymphatic compartmentalization due to soft tissue strains
5
Q
describe treatment objectives
A
- promote TERMINAL lymphatic drainage
- Promote REGIONAL lymphatic drainage
- TREAT soft tissue strains
6
Q
tx for soft tissue straings
A
- balances the body
- augments the respiratory circulatory mechanimsms
- allows the free flow of fluids through the tissues and from compartment to another
7
Q
GENERAL TREATMENT APPROACH**
A
- Treat from the THORACIC INLET DOWN
- TREAT CENTRAL TO DISTAL (spine-ribs extremities or pelvis-sacrum-extremities)
