Lecture 15: Respiratory Defense Reflex Flashcards
Pulmonary defensive reflexses
cough, sneeze, diving response, laryngeal chemo reflex, pharyngeal phase of swallow
Impairmnet
leads to aspiration, pulmonary infections and increased mortality
enhancement or hyperrresponsivness
reduced quality of life, increased morbidity
cough and sneexe do?
remove mucous or foreign matter from nasla/pulmonary systems
Cough
mechanical manifestation of of neurological problems, receptors in lungs and larynx
Diving response
cold water hits face, trigeminal nerve sends info the brain which causes vasoconstriction, bradycardia and apne
Laryngeal chemoreflec
causes swallowing, laryneospasm, bradycardia and apnea; problem with intubation
airway smooth muscle
narrows airways to limit intrusion of foreign objection more distal airways and stiffen lungs during coughing
Bronchospasm/bronchoconstricttion
increased contractile acyivity of airway smooth muscle
Bronchodilators
drugs that relax or inhibit contractility of airway smooth muscle
Bronchomotor tone
baseline contractile activity of airway smooth muscle
Cilia
move mucous from distal airways to larger airways and ultimately out of the respiratory system
Mucous
composed of glycoproteins produced by goblet cells and submucousal glands, not much in the airways
Functions of mucous
insulator from irritants, antibacterial activity and trap particles
Neural control of mucous
parasympathetic regulation of submucousal and goblet cells
