Lecture 15 (Emily) Flashcards
What is Airworthiness?
measure of a planes suitability for safe flight
What is the UK and US organisations that give out airworthiness certificates?
CAA and FAA
What are the two things that make up handling qualities?
Flying qualities and External factors
What are examples flying qualities? [3]
Agility, stability, pilot-aircraft interference
What are examples of external factors that affect airworthiness?
Mission task, urgency, wind and turbulence
Definition of flying qualities?
stability and control characteristics of plane
Difference between flying and handling qualities?
flying is how well a long task can be fulfilled
handling deals with the short term response of the aircraft, i.e how the aircraft is to fly rather then just theoretically.
Why are there two types of flying qualities requirements
one for civil aircraft and one for military aircraft
What do the flying qualities requirements depend on? [3]
Aircraft class, Flight phase, Level of flying qualities
Class 1 definition
small, light aircraft for trainingC
Class 2 definition
medium weight, low manoeuvrability
Class 3 definition
Large heavy low- medium manoeuvrability aircraft bombers
Flight phase category A
Non terminal flight phases that require rapid manoeuvring and precisise flight path control
Flight phase category B
non terminal flight phases that require gradual manoeuvring
what does a non terminal flight phase mean
not the last flight phase
Flight phase category C
Terminal flight phase that require gradual manoeuvring and precision flight control
Flying Quality Level 1
flying qualities clearly adequate for mission flight phase
Flying Quality Level 2
Flying qualities adequate but an increase in pilot workload
Flying Quality Level 3
degraded flight qualities but if the pilot puts a lot of work in, the plane will be able to carry out the mission
As Flying Quality level increases in number what happens to pilot workload and risk
increases
At Flying Quality level 3 which oscillation can be unstable
phugoid
Purpose of flight testing
to determine the flight performance characteristics
What is a thumprint plot?
a qualitative method to plot wn and damping ratio to see whether flight performance was ok for pilot
What is the Cooper- Harper pilot rating scale
series of numbers that indicate pilots how much they like it e.g A1 for cat A or U8 for cat B
How to excite dynamic responses in plane?
give different control inputs like impulse, step, doublet
